Astigmatism
When a person has astigmatism, the vision is blurry both far away and up close. Each eye has two different
prescriptions. For this reason, special lenses are needed with two powers, called toric lenses. Prescriptions
for toric lenses will have three components: sphere (the basic amount of nearsightedness or farsightedness);
cylinder (how much astigmatism there is); and axis (where the astigmatism is oriented).
Toric lenses for astigmatism are available with both prescription eyeglasses
and contact lenses.
